MPS MIXTAPE PRESERVATION SOCIETY HOUR 26

Cherry Baby aka Emma Wade of the band The Cherrys sits down with me at a popular coffee shop in Fishers, Indiana called The Well to chew the fat concerning the local Indy/Indie music scene and other topics, some of which will be covered in next week's podcast. At this point, I don't really forsee having any podcast interviews be less than an hour in length unless it turns out really bad. They're all gonna be two-parters, even as I managed to make this week's podcast 51 minutes long as opposed to a whole hour.

First things first, however: I saw St. Vincent play a show at The Egyptian Room, and it was great. I open the show with an excerpt from her live show that leads into a stirring rendition of "New York" which she insists could've been titled "Indianapolis" if only the city name didn't have so many syllables. It makes me wonder what kind of connection she has with this city-- is it just the standard "This city is the greatest in the world" rap that every rock star gives at every stop? Or does she really feel kinship with her Hoosier fans? Either way, she delivered a riveting set of previous hits and deep cuts, then did a second set where she played Masseduction in its entirety, all by her bad self.

And she kicked ass.

The topic of females rockin' out in Indiana has been the subject of my podcast for the last few weeks, and with all the craziness going on in the news these days with comedians, actors and politicians getting slapped left and right with sexual harassment and/or abuse charges, I think it's fitting that I've been getting the perspective of women who want to play music or be in the music industry to balance out what is ultimately seen as both a boys' club and a male-dominated marketplace. St. Vincent is a stellar example of women who buck the trends while grappling with the issues that everybody is dealing with in this post-post-post-modern digital web age. Emma Wade gives me a little insight into the things she deals with as a female artist in today's musical landscape.

Along the way, I play some songs by Andy Gibb, Fishbone, and Mark Stewart of the late great Silver Lake group The Negro Problem as well as an award-winning composer of a hit Broadway musical. I also play a few cuts from The Cherrys' repertoire as well as a song from her musical partner Nicholas Clark's side group The Chives.

I also wax poetic (albeit briefly) on the genius of Barry Gibb, and I offer as proof the demo version of the song "Heartbreaker" that he did for Dionne Warwick.

Next week's continuation of the interview finds us wading (no pun intended) deep into some heady subjects, but this week it's strictly business: discussing the ins and outs of playing gigs, writing songs, and marketing yourself in a "little brother" city like Indianapolis.

Here's the rundown of this week's show:
