MPS (MIXTAPE PRESERVATION SOCIETY HOUR 35)

This is the second half of the two-parter I did with Coolhouse, a musical duo featuring J.J. Schoch and Dolly Ramirez. This hour mostly has the leftovers of what we recorded that first time out, but they are far from warmed-over outtakes: there's a protest tune in the mix, plus a sample of J.J. on the double bass, and a piano composition by him as well. Then we go behind the scenes and hear previews from their upcoming debut, which is being touched up in their home studio.

I added some songs from heavyweights like Van Morrison and X. But I spend the last ten minutes going off on what I feel is a negative trend in podcasting: the proliferation of troll-ish shows that merely feature stuck-up snot-nosed know-nothings talking trash about music they barely understand or have the taste to critique. Recently I listened to one such show, and the irony is that when another show with similar content came down the pike, I got the two confused. That's because they had almost identical episodes and common targets. Yeah, it's easy to take potshots at fan faves and one-hit wonders, but it's funny how these hosts of these shows never put their REAL musical tastes out on the chopping block.

That's because they don't have any balls.

I don't waste my time trying to shine a spotlight on the things I hate. I may mention bands I dislike in my podcast, but I certainly don' center shows around them completely. That's because there's too much out there to like. Why spend my time listening to garbage, even if my aim is to bring it down a peg? I'd rather play uplifting music and try to educate the masses.

So please excuse my rant. And just know this: it comes from my heart. From my soul. I'm not ashamed of it. I would rather just spend my time entertaining your eardrums instead of taking a dump on them.

Next week I may go back to focusing on bands that never got their due. We'll see. Until then, just enjoy.

I decided to just jump into the show this week-- no opening segment where I discuss what's coming up. Fuck that; if you listen regularly then you know what's up and if you just started listening... well, you have 37 previous hours to go through to catch up. It's not necessary at this point, and it gives me more time to throw in other segments and more music. And speaking of music, I think playing excerpts of songs instead of entire cuts keeps some of the discussions compact and lean. I am referring to the second segment of the podcast, a new thing I call "Some Ill Shit w/ Nick Culp ". This segment is going to be a regular feature where Nick and I talk about our mutual love of hip-hop. The segments are culled from a long conversation I had with him (like his appearance on my last podcast featuring him , this is conducted over the phone from his home in Oakland CA) and mostly just touch upon our personal reminisces and anecdotes about growing up in the rap era

Hour Nine... Hour Nine... Hour Nine...

The Ninth Hour of the Mixtape Preservation Society podcast is up and running. Check the Podcast Links section in the upper left corner for the appropriate links. As I note in my spoken introduction, this podcast has been airing for nine episodes and already we've had to say goodbye to at least three completely different artists in the time it's been in existence. Chris Cornell, Gregg Allman, and now Prodigy of Mobb Deep... what the fuck is going on in music? WE pay proper tribute to Prodigy by making the first track of this hour the classic Mobb Deep cut "Shook Ones". The interview with DJ Greenhouse comes to a close with this hour, but all it has really done is inspired me to have him on semi-regularly. I think the two of us talking about music is the basis for most podcasts, and it takes the pressure off having a different guest each week... because I'm not sure I want a guest each week anyway. I can be a troll if need be... not proud of it... who am I fooling, I love it. But it's not sustainable: eventually you just want to be able to go online and NOT start a fight with a perfect stranger. I am not looking to get in people's faces constantly, but sometimes THEY bring it to YOU. And so it helps to be able to handle your own in an online squabble. I have great admiration for artists who can handle their own in the real world. Audiences (even the paying ones) aren't always hospitable to performers, especially if alcohol is involved. Hecklers can get a sense of entitlement and decide that THEY, and not the person on the marquee, is worthy of attention. In my opinion, a good live perfoemer can squash that beef in no time flat. It just takes the guts to redirect that energy right back at the perpetrators. Going on stage is not as easy as it looks-- it can be gut-wrenching and anxiety-inducing.
